Marvel Studios made startling announcements at the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 Panel, leaving fans across the globe shocked and excited. The an-hour-long session told us more about MCU's upcoming big movie The Fantastic Four. also revealed major details about its next two Avengers movies.
Presided over by Marvel boss Kevin Feige, the jam-packed presentation however broke the internet with its biggest reveal - return of Robert Downey Jr to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not as Iron Man!
Marvel also showed the audience exclusive footage and trailers of its upcoming movies like Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World.
Robert Downey Jr's MCU comeback
After months of speculations whether or not the Marvel icon will return to the MCU in any manner, the Studios confirmed at Comic-Con 2024 that yes, RDJ is indeed making a comeback. But, there's a catch. Downey is not returning as the fan-favourite superhero Iron Man, rather as Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday. The upcoming big film will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who also join back MCU after Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Robert Downey Jr. is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this time he's switching from hero to villain. At San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (Jul 27) Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that Downey, 59, will play the infamous villain Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers movies Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Downey's entrance on stage, flanked by actors in masks and robes, electrified the crowd. "New mask, same task," he said. "What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters."
While sharing the news on Instagram, the makers wrote, "'New mask, same task.' Robert Downey Jr. surprises Hall H to announce his return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, in theatres May 2026. #SDCC." Check it out below!
