Pahalgam Terror Attack explained: What happened and how the terrorists killed 28 tourists in 'mini Switzerland'

- A terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, left 28 people dead, including foreign tourists. The attack occurred in Baisaran Valley, known as mini Switzerland.

- The assailants, reportedly foreign militants wearing army fatigues, singled out victims based on faith, forcing some to recite religious verses before shooting them.

Eyewitness accounts reveal chilling details of how the attack unfolded. Witnesses reported that the assailants, dressed in army fatigues, emerged from the dense pine forests surrounding the meadow. They fired indiscriminately at the group of 40 tourists, causing chaos and panic among the crowd. Some survivors described how the attackers singled out victims based on their religion, forcing men to recite religious verses before shooting them. One woman survivor recounted the horror of losing her husband, starting "My husband was shot in the head.... he was shot for not being a Muslim".

The militant group The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Shesh Paul Vaid described the attack as a “Pulwama 2.0 moment”, calling for a strong response akin to Israel’s approach to terrorism.

Vaid accused the Pakistan Army of orchestrating the attack, claiming that the attackers were Pakistan’s Special Service Group (SSG) commandos disguised as militants.

The attack has escalated tensions between India and Pakistan, with India responding by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, sealing the Wagah-Attari border, and canceling visas for Pakistanis.

Global leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have condemned the attack.

Security has been tightened, and investigations are ongoing to ensure tourist safety and prevent further militant operations in the region.
